I was on my way to photograph the reintroduction of young swans to Hayden Valley when I saw him. There was a large male grizzly bear on the edge of the river. I thought to myself, OK, I’ll stop for a bear. When I got out, I noticed the bear was laying on something. Sleeping actually. The scene was not unlike the aftereffects of a large Thanksgiving dinner. That something turned out to be an elk carcass. Indeed, this was a rare opportunity to see a grizzly next to the river, sleeping on a large bull elk.

Then, I noticed something moving deep in the forest. It was a wolf cautiously making its way towards the carcass and the bear. The grizzly slowly raised its head, as if in a food coma. While they never touched noses nor shared a meal, I’m sure words were exchanged through facial expressions. The wolf retreated into the forest, the bear went back to sleep, and I went on my way to photograph the swans.
